Botany

Profile

The Department of Botany was established in 1963. At present there are 4 teaching faculty, 2 non-teaching staff and student strength is 320. The department has two well equipped lab to cater to the needs of the students. The department has a well-built Museum with a large collection of preserved Plant specimens and also a roof-top garden. The Department provides excellent practical knowledge which is supported by the fact that many of our students have enrolled for post graduate studies in Botany.

Biotechnology

PROFILE

Department of Biotechnology was established in the year 2007. The department is comprised two teaching faculties, a lab attender and 90 students. Students are benefited with individual attention and numerous opportunities of research projects and industrial experience. There is well designed framework for assessment including seminars, model making and collage making to instill public speaking skill and team spirit. The department also takes initiative to sensitize students towards social responsibilities through visits to orphanages, old-age homes, and rehabilitation Centre.

Chemistry

PROFILE

The Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1966. The department is endowed with well qualified, experienced and dedicated faculty. At present there are 8 teaching faculty, 2 non-teaching staff and the total student strength is 250. The department has two well equipped labs to cater to the needs of the students for their academic and also for their research activities. The department takes pride in its exceptional teaching, which is supported by the fact that many of its students taking up Chemistry programmes for their post-graduation and also are actively engaged in research at prestigious universities.

Students may pursue Master’s and Integrated Ph.D. programs in the following subjects at any of the Central universities or State Universities: Medicinal Chemistry, Food Science, Forensic Science, Wood Science, Industrial Chemistry, Nano Science Research, Material Science, Inorganic Organic, Physical, Analytical, Biochemistry, Medicinal Chemistry. Chemistry graduated students can work as Analytical chemist in Industries (Pharmaceuticals, Fertilizers, Water purification, Aromatics, Food Industry, Textiles) and as Clinical Chemists (Ex: Biocon, Sun pharmacy etc). Students can work in various departments such as Forestry, Forensic Science, Mining, Agriculture (ICAR), Pollution control board, and ISRO.

PROFILE

The Department was established in 1990. It has well qualified and experienced faculty who strive to impart their expertise in handling diversified subjects of the UG programs. The teaching methodology in the department goes beyond fulfilling the syllabus requirements of the University, to meet the industry needs. Faculty motivates and guides the students to do projects to solve real world problems with emerging technologies. The Department has highly successful alumni occupying important posts in leading Companies of the IT Industry. 5 teaching and 1 non teaching faculty serve in the department consisting of appx. 250 students.

PROFILE

Department of Economics was established in the year 1956 and had the distinction of teaching the students of all streams. Economics is offered as a core subject in BA and BSc. Year after year the department has been successfully producing quality conscious and bright youngsters who are stepping out as enthusiastic citizens. The main goal of the department is to create a spirit of social consciousness and ethical values among the present generation. PROFILE

English Department was established with the institution of the College in 1956. 6 teachers in the dept. – 1 Assoc. Professor, 1 Assistant Professor and 4 Lecturers appointed by the Management. It caters to approximately 1600 students. The English Club organizes activities, seminars and talks, while the Creative Corner, a wall magazine, encourages, inspires and showcases the literary and creative talents of the students.

The Department offers Optional English and General English Courses. Recently with the increase in the number of Additional English students, Additional English is also taught. It runs a Certificate Course in Communicative English. It has plans of establishing Post Graduate Department of English.

As observed in the recent years, there is a great demand for learning English as a language, as it is a global language and passport to global jobs. Optional English is a sought after course as it helps them prepare for Competitive exams like IAS and KAS, enter the field of Journalism, creative writing, get jobs in the Corporate Sector and also Teach at Primary, Secondary School levels. The Department of Electronics was established in the year 1988. The strength of the department lies in the team of highly motivated and qualified faculty. The spacious laboratory is well equipped with latest devices and instruments. It provides personalized attention to the needs of every student. The students actively participate in various workshops conducted by the department and design interesting projects during the curriculum. PROFILE

Hindi Department was incepted in the year 1958. It mainly flourished under the leadership and Guidance of Scholars like Dr. V. Venkatesh, Prof. M. V. Leelavathi, Prof. K. G. Prabhakar and Dr. K. R. Prema. At present the Department is in the able hands of Dr. Manjushree Menon, Head of the Department of Hindi with 32 years of Teaching Experience. There are 250 Hindi Students. Three Students namely Kushboo. K. Patel (B.Com), Jisha Varghese (BSC) and Faria Kauser (B.Sc) have been felicitated with BU Hindi Toppers award for Scoring highest marks in Hindi by Bangalore University Hindi Teacher’s Association “Gyan Kiran”

Physical Education

Profile

The Department of Physical Education was established in the year 1973 as sports club. In 1977 it was renamed as department of Physical Education. Since inception the department has trained the college teams in several games and sports through dedicated physical education directors, abided by the support extended by the by the management over the years. Our college teams have won several, intercollegiate tournament in Cricket, Basketball Athletics, Table Tennis, Chess etc. The college encourages individual sportsmen and sports women to Excel in their chosen sport. Many students have represented State, Nationals, University and Zonal and won laurels.

The Department of sports which is an integral part of the institution, strives towards the holistic development of the student and molding of their personality Achieving excellence in sports is the prime goal of the department. The department through supports and nurtures the talent in the student and provides them with the requisite infrastructure, coaching facilities and exposure to fulfill their dreams.

At present the Department is ably run by Smt. Maheshwari N Kumar, Head of the Department. The Department of History is dedicated to help students understand the present-day scenarios of the world through the tales of the past. Psychology

PROFILE

The Department of Psychology was established in the year 2000. With the use of scientific analysis of psychological paradigms and the use of empirical research, the department of Psychology seeks to advance knowledge of behaviour and its underlying mechanisms. The Department provides practical exposure to the students by organizing field visits to hospitals, rehabilitation centres and organizations related to Clinical, Counselling and Industrial Psychology. It also helps the students build research skills by providing hand-on opportunities to work on research projects on various topics, experience psychological test- construction and report writing. The Department facilitates holistic development by organising fests, workshops, inter- class competitions, seminars, role plays, paper presentations, street plays, exhibitions, and awareness programs in and around college. It also often invites eminent speakers to interact with the students about various Psychological themes and contemporary issues in Psychology from reputed institutions. The department library is well-stacked with books related to the subject as well as extra reading material to help students prepare for various competitive exams such as the civil services, UGC-NET, GMAT, GRE etc.

A graduate in psychology understands themselves and others through basic psychological and scientific principles. Psychology focuses on understanding human dynamics in workplace, improves employability and aids in comprehending relationships and well-being of fellow human beings. It fosters the development of critical and analytical thinking skills that are important in business, law and other professions.

By opting for an undergraduate degree in Psychology, students are equipped with foundational knowledge and skills to pursue a Masters degree in any specialization related to psychology and serve the community in various capacities such as Clinical Psychologists, Counselors, Teachers and Researchers, Industrial/Organizational Psychologists, HR personnel in corporate offices, special educators, trainers, school psychologists and sports psychologists. The department was established in the year 1969. At present there are 11 teaching faculty members who are qualified and committed to facilitate students to learn Physics and to develop their analytical thinking. There are three well-equipped exclusive Physics labs for all BSc students. Sanskrit

PROFILE

Department of Sanskrit was established in the year 1961. It is one of the oldest departments of our college. Prof. M.P.L. Sahstry and Prof. B. R. Sheshadri Iyengar were the early two faculty members. “Gita Jayanthi” celebrations is the best practice of the department. At present the Department is ably run by Prof. Rajeshwari Bhat K with 29 years of teaching experience who bagged “Best Teacher” Award from KPA in 2006. There are 270 Sanskrit students.

Sanskrit is offered as second language for all the three courses – B.A., B.Sc., B.Com.

Scope of the subject after Graduation:

After graduation with Sanskrit, students can pursue higher education - M.A (Sanskrit) , M.Phil , PhD and so on. If the student opts “veda” as optional subject in their PG course they may get a job as a priest in temples. If they opt for “jyothishya shashtra” then they may become a good astrologer. After PG course they may get a job in Ayurveda colleges also.

Department of Zoology was established in the year 1958. The Journalism department was started in the 2005 to meet growing trends of flourishing media industry. There are 55 students studying this subject. Nikitha Harish of 2012 batch secured 1st rank in Bangalore University. The Department of Kannada came into existence in 1956 with the inception of the college, Prof. G. P Rajarathnam, Prof. K. V Rajagopal guided destinies of Kannada during its infancy. It was joined by Prof. Srinivasa Sharma, Prof. Rama Rao Kulkarni, Prof. TV Subramanya, Dr. Vijaya Subbara , Dr. Puttaswamy, Dr. Lokeshwarappa KB. Kannada is taught for BA, BCom, and BSc students at degree level, and optional Kannada for BA students.



Prof. G. P Rajarathnam was a renowned poet, dramatist, scholar and great poet in the field of Kannada literature. Prof. K. V Rajagopal well known dramatist, story writer and researcher in the field of Kannada literature. Prof. Srinivasa Sharma a good dramatist, critic and poet in the field of Kannada literature. Prof. Ramarao Kulkarni a good orator, critic in Kannada literature and also Dr. Vijaya subbaraj a well-known multilingual scholar, dramatist, novelist, poet, story writer, critic and translator in the field of Kannada literature. They strove hard for four decades building the department of Kannada.
