Scope in the Subject after Graduation:

Botanists are required by varied organisations ranging from multinationals to research organisations to hospitality and tourism bodies, depending upon the nature of their activities. They fit into different roles depending on the activity of the organisation and evolve into senior positions. The amount of diversity in the field of Botany gives it students to choose their specializations as per their choice, aptitude and interests.


There is huge scope of being a part of this industry merely keeping in mind the amount of diversity it has to offer. One can be a part of any reputed organization as a Plant explorer, Conservationist, Ecologist, Environment consultant, Horticulturist, Plant biochemist, Molecular biologist.


The number of professions botanists can go into nowadays is endless. Moreover the application of plant sciences improves the yield and supply of medicines, foods, fibers, building materials and other plant products. The knowledge of plant sciences is essential for development and management of forests, parks, waste lands, sea wealth etc.

Biotechnology

PROFILE
  • Department of Biotechnology, MES Degree College was established in 2007 with three Staff members with student strength of 68 affiliated to BU. Presently with student strength is increased to 90 with three staff members and an attender, Currently (2018) it is affiliated to Bangalore Central University( BCU). The quality and the strength of department mainly is its qualified and experienced faculty. The teachers have been actively participating in various national and international conferences and updating their knowledge. Students are motivated to participate in intercollegiate competitions and are exposed to hands on workshops in current topics such as Bioinformatics genetic engineering etc.

English

  • The English Department was instituted in 1956. Initially the Department conducted the teaching programmes for both the Pre-University and under-graduate Classes. As the College is affiliated to Bangalore University, the Department adheres to the prescribed syllabus of the University. Post Bifurcation the two have found their independent existence. The Department has had a rich legacy of Scholarly and Committed Teachers with specialization in their diverse areas. It strives to strengthen the literary and language skills of the students.
  • English is a dynamic language taught and learnt extensively in India. In the age of Information, Communication and Technology(ICT), Globalization and Liberalization, It has been catapulted to an important position, creating a great demand for English language skills.
  • The Department conducts teaching programs for General English and Optional English. The General English classes are conducted with more emphasis on the basic skills of language, with the objective of making students proficient in them.
  • Optional English Course aims to sharpen the skills of analysis, spirit of enquiry and also develop liberal humanist approach to life.
  • The Department also runs a UGC sponsored Add on course in Communicative English. It aims at teaching LSRW skills with relevance to the present day job market. It makes the students job ready and improves their prospects of social mobility.
  • The English Club and The Creative Corner are also managed by the Department.
  • The Creative Corner, is a wall magazine which nurtures the literary talent of the students. It publishes articles, poems and writings of the students on various topics of relevance to the society periodically. The objective is to enthuse them, to think and imagine and also express their views and opinions uninhibitedly.

  • Prof. Gayathri joined the English Department in 1983. Her specialization areas are Linguistics and Comparitive Drama. She has attended various seminars and conferences and presented a paper on ‘Rabindranath Tagore – The man and his Philosophy’. She has been a member of Board of Examiners several times over.
  • Her contributions to N.C.C. have been praiseworthy. She worked as the N.C.C. Officer of the 1 KAR girls Bn) for 27 years (1985 to 2012) and received the Chief Minister Commendation Award twice in her tenure. During her tenure as an N.C.C. officer, M.E.S. College won Best Institution Trophy twice.

  • The Hindi Department was started right from the inception of MES College in 1958. The faculty members who served Hindi Department since then and till date are Dr. V. Venkatesh, Dr. RadhakrishnaMurthy, Prof.K.G.Prabhakar, Prof.M.V. Leelavathi, Dr.K.R.Prema and Dr.Manjushree Menon.
  • The Mission of the Department is to spread Kannada among as many no. of students as possible apart from academic excellence, building leadership qualitites , creating positive outlook and mentoring weak students by providing friendly atmosphere. Physics

The department of Physics was established in 1966( Pre university) and B.Sc (PCM) was started in 1969. It has carved a niche for itself both within the college and among the colleges affiliated to Bangalore University. Since 2018, MES Degree College is affiliated to Bangalore Central University. The strength of the department lies in the team of highly motivated and qualified faculty. Currently the department has eleven faculty members with varied specialization and three non teaching Lab Assistants/Attenders.The senior faculty of the department are and have been on the Board of studies of Physics (UG) of BCU,BU and several Autonomous colleges in Bangalore. It is a matter of pride that many of our students have pursued Physics as a career and are occupting responsible positions in reputed industries, Research Laborities, Institutions of Higher learning including Universities and Colleges both in India and abroad

  • Since 1986 the department has been training students to take up the National Graduate Examination in Physics conducted by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers(IAPT).

Research Areas

The department has a Research Advisory Committee having distinguished expert members on it.There are two active research groups in the department in the area of Material Science and Physics Education Research. In addition students are encouraged to take up projects under the mentorship of the faculty members.

Two value added courses of two semester duration in Computational Physics (using Python) and Basic Electronics is planned from the academic year 2019. Details will be posted soon.

Research Centre in Applied Mathematics

Established in 2005 Basic science research is the present need of the society. Thus, Post Graduate Department started Research Centre in Applied Mathematics in the year 2005 recognised by Bangalore University Bangalore. Research in multiple fields has been the primary focus of the Centre and is constantly working in helping the humanity through quality research. The main objective is to train young students with very strong fundamental principles and logical tools of mathematics to face the challenges of the next generation and to train them to play the role of fulfilling the needs of science and technology, industry, institutions research and academics.

  • The department of samskrutham is one of the oldest departments of our college. Prof.M.P.L.Sastry and Prof. B.R.Sheshadri Iyengar were the early two faculty members of this department. Presently, the faculty consists of Dr.J.Sreenivasa Murthy, Dr. Sree Srivatsa, and Sri K.S. Venkatesh, Dr.Sree Srivatsa is on deputation to B.M.S.College , Basavangudi,Bangalore.
  • Inter Collegiate Competitions in Bhagavad Gita recitation and essay writing were held in the month of January and the prizes were distributed on ————–

  • Dr.J.Sreenivasa Murthy has contributed articles and reviews in special issues of kannada dailies: Vijaya Karnataka and Vijaya Vani.He has translated “Madhyama Nikaya” volume 1 and 2 from Pali to Kannada(new edition) published by Mahabodhi Society, Bangalore.He has translated volume 8 of the yoga vasistha,(The first 7 volumes have been translated from Sanskrit to Kannada) which is under print.

Vision:

  • Students to inculcate general awareness, sensitivity and ability to apply knowledge acquired through the curriculum, to daily life and larger social issues.

  • Students who graduate from the department to be sensitive to the environment and to have an insight into methods of conservation of all natural resources.

Objectives:

To train students to;

  1. Appreciate taxonomy of the animal kingdom.

  2. Understand the role and significance of all organisms and their contribution to the ecosystem.

  3. Appreciate basic aspects of anatomy and physiology of higher vertebrates including humans.

  4. Gain insight into commercial / economic zoological sub-streams such as Vermiculture, sericulture, apiculture, pisciculture, poultry, dairy farming, etc., such that students are empowered to undertake employment or set up entrepreneurships in related industries.

  5. Equip students to assimilate knowledge and apply the same to areas of conservation, human health and community wellness.

  6. Acquire knowledge with respect to basic techniques in biological procedures, especially of industrial relevance.

Kannada

The department of Kannada came into existence in 1956 with the inception of the college, prof. G. P Rajarathnam, prof. K. V Rajagopal guided destinies of Kannada during its infancy. It was joined by prof. Srinivasa Sharma, prof. Rama Rao Kulkarni, Prof. TV Subramanya, Dr. Vijaya Subbara , Dr. Puttaswamy, Dr. Lokeshwarappa KB, Kannada is taught for BA, BCom, and BSc students at degree level, and the faculties also taught optional Kannada for BA students.



Prof. GP Rajarathnam was a renowned poet, dramatist, scholar and great poet in the field of Kannada literature. Prof. KV Rajagopal well known dramatist, story writer and researcher in the field of Kannada literature. Prof. Srinivasa Sharma a good dramatist, critic and poet in the field of Kannada literature. Prof. Ramarao Kulkarni a good orator, critic in Kannada literature and also Dr. Vijaya subbaraj a well-known multilingual scholar, dramatist, novelist, poet, story writer, critic and translator in the field of Kannada literature. They strove hard for four decades building the department of Kannada.



Now the department is strongly setup by Dr puttaswamy and Dr. Lokeswarappa KB Prof. AN Bhagya, Dr. Vanishree, Smt. Maheshwari GB, by organising educational tours to places of historical and monumental significance, arranging seminars, workshops, competitions, etc.

  • CHAKRAVYUH
  • Chakravyuh, an inter-collegiate annual Commerce and Management fest is conducted by the staff and students of the Department of Commerce every year. This was started by us during the academic year 1999-2000.This event draws participants from a large number of colleges in and around Bangalore. 8 events relating to business are organized which are spread over 2 days.

  • PARIVARTHAN
  • Parivarthan is an annual inter class commerce fest organized to give an opportunity to our students to hone their skills in facing the competitive business world. This is a College level version of Chakravyuh. The second year B.Com students organize this fest and its events in areas like Marketing, Human Resources etc, Business quiz is also a regular event. These students gain experience in organizing and organize the larger event Chakravyuh when they come to their Final year B.Com.
